The Pickity Place is one of my favorite places in the world. It’s a restaurant, gift shop, greenhouse and garden all rolled into one. Situated far out in the woods of New Hampshire, the little red house has been around for hundreds of years, and was famously drawn into the story of Little Red Riding Hood as Grandma’s house. A room is permanently set up with a wolf wearing a nightgown and a bonnet, pretending to sleep in a four poster bed.
I first visited the Pickity Place with my friend Carlye when I was 16. I had long heard my mother talk about going there with her friends to pick up dried herbs from their gift shop and plants from their greenhouse. They also served 5 course fancy little lunches, so I was all about trying it out.
Their gardens are spectacular, and they garnish all their dishes with herbs picked fresh daily. My mother and I have made a ritual of visiting the Pickity Place together at least once a year – usually in May for my birthday and for Mother’s Day. We get to catch up, take lots of photos (her flower ones are the best), and unwind away from the rest of the busy world. If we have time, we also visit the White Home Collections, a beautiful farmhouse full of antiques and collectibles.
Our most recent visit was last week. We were about to embark on the days-long task of taking photos of her home for the upcoming listing, since she and my step-dad are looking to leave their small town for a little more excitement in Portland, Maine. Everything had to look perfect, so we scheduled in something fun as a reward for all that work. The weather was amazing, the food was delicious (we both had the summer ratatouille stack), and the company was the best part of all.
